The next storm slated to arrive here Friday, then continue into Saturday will be a more typical Virginia winter storm, albeit a really BIG one. The last snowstorm brought snow to the entire state due to the prevasive arctic air. This next one will present with rain, sleet and snow issues, inluding here Central Virginia.
We’ll likely see all precip types during the duration, and therefore snow totals remain a tough call. Beware hanging on every model run for clarity on this.

What is everyones guess on how many inches of snow Central VA will get?? I am in teh Chester area and I too PRAY we get 12″ but i doubt it very seriously 😦 But…miracles CAN happen :))))

I dont understnd the rain forecast on Friday I am seeing from NWS and some TV stations .
I really dont. All of the data overnight has shifted the Low track SIGNIFCANTLY further south and east… yet the forecasters at NWSFO AKQ said
…amazingly… the data didnt change.
That assertion is Just Nonsense. The Canadian Euoperan GFS 6z GFS and Ukmet all shifted south and east. Maybe they are seeing something I dont.
But the Models did shift south
There is No doubt that RIC metro area will NOT stay all snow. Richmond WILL Mix… and RIC could go over to rain at some point late friday night early saturday Morning. But if you are located west or N or NE of downtown RIC by 15 miles this could stay all snow.
and if you are in the Northern Neck region you get get WELL over 12″
oh and BTW… reading what is on the CHANNEL 12 forecast ..I think it is VERY good.
So it will end as snow then? 😉
5 inches of snow tonight in Waynesboro
And a lot more for your area this weekend!
Just ventured outside to take some stuff out of the car…it’s a mix of snow and sleet right now in the West End (Patterson/Parham area). I sure hope this doesn’t ruin my day tomorrow 😦 Dammit I got stuff to do!!!!! I can’t stand being in the house anymore!!!!!!!! 😉
Why are you staying in your house? Are you snowed in? I’ve been out and about since sunday morning. Not sure why yor stuck at ya house Dave?
Haha…I’m just lazy is all…I took advantage of all the food and supplies I stocked up on; and really found no need to leave. I was out…but only to go and get some more rock salt for what I knew was going to be a messy buildup of ice, and sludge overnight tonight. After all, I don’t want to get out and actually be on my way to the office tomorrow; only to wind up breaking my leg or arm as I fall down the front steps on this darn ice 😉
So what are the chances of Central Va continuing to get these types of storms throughout Feb? Have we settled into a pattern now for the foreseeable future?
I like the local weather guys but I always go to Wxrisk.com. This guy is soooooooo accurate…or atleast he has been the last 2 years. He TOTALLY disagrees with the local weather and the NWS on their forecast. I think we will end up seeing all snow….Sorry to all who are tired of it….
Make it go away!! We do not need any more precip!!! Way too much flooding going on here in central VA.
I have a feeling its going to trend colder here this weeekend as new model runs come out. Just a gut feeling. During the December snowstorm, models trended colder. Latest weekend total precip puts RIC in close to 2 inches. Now all we need are models to begin trending cold air. If both those dynamics materialize, we will surely get a snowstorm for the history books. (talking feet)
Don’t give up on this one just yet. Mother nature has a way of surprising us.
How much snow will we get this weekend?
Way too early to say Jeff. I keep saying, this is going to be a very tricky storm to predict, even up to the last minute. Yes, we could get mainly rain/mix in the Richmond area but we could also get hit with another major snowfall. I would not bet either way at this point. My models should have a little better info this time tomorrow. They just can’t agree right now.
Probably more rain than anything else this weekend. Just a hunch.
is’n this what we were saying a week ago before the jan. 30th storm. the forcast is still 3-4 days away.
no. that was just a question of timing and how much- not a question of cold air in place. I don’t think anyone last week said the storm would be a rain/ snow event, it was just position of the storm and accumulation. there will most likely be God’s gift of too much warm air over the area Friday and Friday night. even snow lovers would have to admit 20″ on top of last week’s storm would push 90% of RIC’s population into a full on Jack Nicholson/ Shining episode.
Bring on the snow!!!!! Maybe you old people don’t like it but I’m young and lovin’ it
then your young tail can come shovel my old butt out for the third time.
I’d love it more if I didn’t have to travel out for work or shovel it. Bring on the sun for some real fun….
Will you people stop wishing the snow away please??? We so rarely see nice winters like this around here, can we just enjoy it? Who knows when we will see it again???
I wish the snow would just go away! Only children need this stuff. Rain is fine, though.
If we get a lot of main we are going to have major flooding issues. Two inches of rain plus all the snow melting will cause a lot of flooding.
Actually Kare, the total amount of liquid precip in the last storm wasn’t much. Remember the ratio for the storm was about 15 inches of snow for every one inch of rain, which means less than one inch to an inch of liquid precip for the area. This is why the James didn’t rise again. If you’re worried about too much precip and flooding, then you WANT this to be snow, not rain. This past snow really won’t do anything in the way of flooding.
Well, I can’t speak for anyone else, but I can’t actually control the weather with my mind. If the snow doesn’t come, it’s not because I wished it away. I’m pretty sure only truly magical people could do that, like Neil Patrick Harris, Lady Gaga, or Anderson Cooper.
LOL! Right on.
I think we may have to create a separate blog for snow enthusiasts. All this praying for rain and 75 degrees is bumming me out. : )
I’m praying for rain and 80 degrees.
I believe that people who love snow don’t have to shovel driveways, sidewalks, patios, or places in the yard for the dogs to pee.
I understand the assumption; but alas, I too have to muster for shovel duty. I figure I burn all the calories I need to justify the cookies and cocoa that inevitably find their way into my diet. So its all good from that point of view!
Not True> We are old folks that have to hire someone to clean “driveway, sidewalk, and a place for the dog to pee”!
Let it snow, we enjoy and just add water to the soup!
Fale assumption. I love snow AND do the shoveling. But not until I need to. See, I’m one of those strange people in Richmond who will stay off the roads for days because while I’m confident in my own 4WD’s abilities, I’m not confident in the abilities of the sedan drivers who absolutely must go out for whatever reason.
Praying for all rain, Ive seen enough snow to last me years and years…..
I’m hoping for all rain for this one but I wouldn’t mind seeing another big snowstorm in a few weeks to end this epic winter with a bang.
Amen!
Bring on more snow please! Ive been cheated so many years on winter weather!
Then you can come shovel me out to get me to work on Monday. I’m tired of shoveling.
anyone have a new map or model? please tell me it’s gonna actually be 75 and sunny.
It’s going to be sunny and 75 F somewhere, just not in Richmond Area this coming weekend…
whats wrong
I hope it doesn’t snow on friday and saturday because
my aunt has a baby on saturday so i hope it doesn’t snow
hi dont know what you guys are talking about
da weather
This storm will trend further north and more then likely will have us on that dreaded rain/snow line. Sure doesn’t look like a big snow maker for sure. If the system slows down it might give the cold air a chance to get in here more.A storm like this may give us 2 – 4 inches of snow and more as you go west and north of Richmond.
thank God. 2″-4″ is 2″-4″ too much at this point. bring on Spring!!!
What Jim D. is trying to say is that they have no idea at this point on this one. This one will be fine tuned up until it starts coming down. Going to be very hard to give accurate snow totals because we don’t know what type of precip we will get for the whole storm. Unlike the last one which was very cold and knew it would be snow the whole duration.
jim so are you saying that we will not see the same snow totals that we did in last weekends storm?I live in chesterfeild near the courhouse and we got about 9 inches
anne
Typical Virginia Storm – does that mean the forecast will change to all rain at the last minute?
yes
Is it going to start Friday night or all day?
Nobody can answer that question on Tuesday for a storm that isn’t arriving until Friday. Heck, last week, they were adjusting the times up until Friday afternoon…
And even then they got it wrong!
