3 week cold snap broken

That took a while!  After a long stretch of cold weather, our heating bills will get a little relief through the weekend.  Highs near 50 will feel balmy during this Frigid February.

I was surprised to read this morning the historic nature of our recent cold weather. Read for yourself from the NWS in Wakefield:

RICHMOND VA CLIMBED TO AT LEAST 45 DEGREES TODAY…FEB 18TH. THIS IS THE WARMEST DAY AT RICHMOND SINCE JAN 28TH. A 20 DAY STRETCH WITH TEMPERATURES REMAINING BELOW 45 DEGREES IS THE 3RD LONGEST SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1897. THE LONGEST WAS A 30 DAY STRETCH THAT ENDED ON FEB 9TH 1966.

    For fellow snow geese:
The storm forming in the next two to three days looks interesting. Today’s models seem to be showing a serious strengthening off the coast of VA/NC. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit more snow in our northwest RIC area from this round. NE PA and further north look like they could be getting absolutely blasted.

The storm behind that (next week) I think could have potential for snow coming from the south and could make a snowy run up the coast. That seems to be the one to watch right now.

Thanks again to the mets here at WWBT for hosting (and contributing to!) this blog. It certainly is quite an enjoyable distraction!

Andrew, time for a new blog discussing the possibilites of next week! The TV is for reality but the blog is for hype so what are you seeing?

    • afreiden says:

That’s an interesting point–seems like the blog has become the gathering place for snow-lovers! You guys can hype all you want. While we will do occasional weather analysis on the blog for upcoming storms, for the most part our forecast discussions are found on the web page http://www.nbc12.com/Global/category.asp?C=128875&nav=menu128_3 where they are updated several times daily.

      Cheers,
      Andrew

He’s what my boy says over at wxrisk:
“The bottom line is that I increasingly confident that there will be a major winter storm for a good portion of Western and far North Carolina as well as a significant portion of southern VA. If the Canadian track is right this storm will set a record for the most snow ever the month of March in Richmond Virginia.”

Hey Andrew F. You made a point on the 7am tv forecast of saying it’s going to feel like “winter” leading upto and into the weekend and yet your temps are showing 48/49! That normally means it could acually hit 50’s! I’m just wondering why you really “stressed” that it would be cold. Are those temps you’re showing not accurate? That don’t seem cold to me! Cool maybe!

    • afreiden says:

“stressed”? I’m not stressed about it but most of our viewers want spring to arrive after getting a brief warm-up this past weekend. (I know our snow-loving blog commenters would disagree with that).

I think it’s going to be windy thurs/Friday (20mph+) and probably blustery this weekend, too. Coupled with slightly colder than average temperatures I think it’ll feel like winter.

Add to that the fact that next week will likely be cold and potentially stormy all add up to a decidedly wintry feel to the forecast starting tomorrow night.
      Cheers,
      Andrew

So you’re saying there’s a good chance for a decent size snow storm soon in our area then! Hmmmmm… 🙂

  4. Moi says:

    New material please.

  5. Woodlake says:

wxrisk has an update…english please. new to all of this.

    • snowmanshortpump says:

That guy lives in his own little world. I wouldn’t pay much attention to what you see on his site. Stick here with Jim and Andrew. They know what they’re talking about!

      • Annie says:

Snowmanshortpump—-Your beloved Jim and Andrew make mistakes too. I personally like wxrisk ‘s website. it’s fun to read. And yes, wxrisk has been talking about a snowstorm coming around March 3rd for awhile now. Hope he’s right and if not, no big deal

      • snowmanshortpump says:

And he’s “talked” about a lot of other things that just haven’t happened!

      • Dudley says:

Ok Annie, and if he is right no big deal also right?

    • joey says:

woodlake.. he is saying big east coast winter storm is coming MARCH 2-3… he’s been talking about it on his blog and in the wall street Journal …since feb 19.

Thanks to a glorious Southern exposure, I actually have opened my sliding glass door a bit to get some fresh air in the house!! So tired of everything being sealed shut! Also thankful that no one in the family suffers from allergies (waiting to be able to open windows and shut off the HVAC!!!).

  7. Matt says:

SNOW TOTALS ARE HARD TO CALL.

  8. Matt says:

FROM 120 – 141 HRS IT DOES SHOW SN w/ 0.5 precip in place. i haave pics to proof it with temps 25 – 30 not 39.

  9. Weather Prophet says:

Take a look at the first weekend in March. Something major is going to happen.

  10. scs says:

I’m so tired of laundry! Winter means layers of clothing therefore piles of laundry. Give me 85 and sunny. Tshirts and shorts! No socks to pair up! But if its gonna be cold it might as well snow!!

  11. The Lone Wolf says:

Gross. Why would you want more snow?

  12. kevin says:

A lot still needs to fall in to place but we could get a big snowstorm next week.Strom track will be key !!!

  13. snowmanshortpump says:

It looks like middle/end of next week is going to be very interesting in our area! Stay tuned…

  14. JB says:

It has been a remarkable stretch of ‘cold weather’ – don’t want to see the next utility bills. At least we get a break this weekend. The cold/chill to come won’t come as a shock since we’ve had so much this season.

  15. ryan says:

one more monster storm is all i ask for!

  16. afreiden says:

Jim and I have been talking about the chill to come… check out our forecast page for that

  17. snowmanshortpump says:

It will be short lived. Watch out for next weekend folks…
